Makeup can be a tricky thing to master. You have to find a look that works for you, and you need to do it all on your own. Sure you can go to a cosmetics counter or have a friend show you the ropes, but ultimately it’s up to you to find your signature look. Everyone that wears makeup probably has a few simple looks they can easily put on for work or running an errand, but what about if you want to do something a bit different?

Having a few go-to looks is always a good idea, but sometimes you need to do something different. If you aren’t used to wearing flashy makeup, you may not know exactly where to start. The safest way to play around with makeup looks is to pick an area to focus on. Let’s start off with an area where you have a lot of freedom, and can benefit from the smallest changes: your eyes. Here are three key rules for changing up your eye makeup.

1. Know where to focus

When you’re starting off, only focus on your immediate eye area. Some people who are experimenting can get too close to the brown line. If you want to work with nude or light colors, feel free to get a little close to the brow line. Subtle colors can get very close to the brow line, but if you’re playing around with new colors only focus on your eyes and stay away from the upper reaches of your face.

2. Don’t go too big too fast

If your daily wear palette usually revolves around nude colors and earth tones, you probably shouldn’t immediately whip out the black and glittery eyeshadow. If you start off with too much eye makeup, you’re going to feel a little overwhelmed with your new look. If you want to add a nice pop of color to your look, focus on trying a new eye shadow shade that’s a few shades darker than what you’re used to. If you want to play around with the shade of your eyes, experiment with thicker eyeliner lines.

3. Don’t forget your lashes

If you really want to make your eyes pop, but don’t want to have use very flashy eyeshade or eyeliner, consider starting off by focusing on your lashes. Prominent eyelashes can make your eyes look very dramatic and intense, and sometimes some false eyelashes or bold mascara can do wonders for your look. The key to playing with lashes is to make sure that you don’t use too much product. The key is to enhance, not look fake.
